You can find the “Best By” date on the back of the package.

What should I do if I have Northwest Naturals Feline Frozen Turkey Recipe in my home?

First, check the “Best By” date. If it is either of these two dates – 5/21/26 B10 or 6/23/26 B1 – you should discard it immediately and contact the store where you purchased it for a full refund.

If it is one of the two “Best By” dates identified, you should not feed it to your cats.

Only packages with these two specific dates are part of the recall.

My pet recently ate Northwest Naturals Feline Frozen Turkey Recipe. What should I do?

How do you know your other products are safe?

The investigation conducted by the Oregon Department of Agriculture found a single batch of feline frozen turkey food that contained the virus.

What is the source of the contamination?

Based on testing conducted by the Oregon Department of Agriculture, the source of the contamination appears to be the turkey.

Fortunately, it was only used in a single batch of Feline Frozen Turkey Recipe. We have voluntarily recalled the batch and urge pet owners to check the “Best By” date on any of that product they may have in their home.

How did you discover the contamination?

Sadly, a cat died after eating the product. Our hearts go out to the pet owner. Testing by the cat’s veterinarian prompted a call to the Oregon Department of Agriculture, which confirmed the presence of the HPAI virus in this one package.

Does the recall impact any dog food recipes?

No. The product that is being recalled is Northwest Naturals Feline Frozen Turkey Recipe with a “Best By” dates of either 5/21/26 B10 or 6/23/26 B1.

Are other cat food recipes safe to feed cats?

Yes, all other NWN recipes, dates and batches are safe for pets. We have nothing to suggest that the virus is present in any other cat food recipes.

I purchased a Turkey recipe in freeze-dried form with a Best By date between the recalled lot codes. Is it safe to feed?

Yes, As long as the Feline Turkey Recipe does not include either of the two recalled “Best By” dates, 5/21/26 B10 or 6/23/26 B1, it is safe to feed to your cat. The 2 dates listed are not inclusive of other dates between those 2 dates . This is limited to frozen feline turkey recipe of the dates listed.

If you use HPP, why did the H5N1 virus remain in the NWN Feline Frozen Turkey Recipe?

We do not yet know. We use HPP as the best food safety method available to maintain a high quality raw pet food. The H5N1 virus is an emerging strain of the virus and we, along with the Department of Agriculture and others, are conducting a thorough investigation.

Other companies claim that HPP kills Avian Influenza. How does your HPP process differ?

High pressure cold processing – often referred to as HPP – uses high pressure of various pressure levels to inactivate pathogens such as salmonella, E. coli 0157, and listeria.

It is considered the gold standard in making raw meat and poultry safe for consumption. A pioneer in the raw pet food market, Northwest Naturals has been using the technique successfully for 10+ years. HPP systems operate on similar principles.

What steps is NWN taking to prevent H5N1 contamination in future batches?

We are working closely with the Oregon Department of Agriculture and several other labs to develop a test to screen for H5N1.

Will you be regularly testing for Avian Influenza after this recall?

Yes, we are reviewing how routine tests can be quickly applied at facilities.

Where did the virus come from, and how did it get into NWN food?

Avian influenza originates in wild birds. It can be spread by contact with an infected bird or with its saliva or feces. Avian flu virus is a respiratory virus and, like measles or the flu, can be easily infected by aerosol droplets.

We are still investigating how the turkey used in the frozen Feline Turkey Recipe came to be infected in this one package.

Isn’t your facility USDA-approved?

Yes, Northwest Naturals pet food is made in a USDA-approved facility. As a USDA-approved facility, we are required to meet strict hygiene, quality control, and safety regulations for processing meat and other ingredients used in pet food. USDA is onsite every day on every shift and has offices in each of our facilities.

Our products are produced in facilities that comply with USDA standards, ensuring high-quality ingredients and safety for pets.

What measures will be put in place to prevent this from happening again?

We already only buy approved human grade raw materials. We also vet all suppliers from where we buy our high quality products

Our Quality control teams are reviewing all possible improvements in our process control steps.

How can we trust that NWN products will be safe to feed moving forward?

We take our role as a leader in the natural pet food market very seriously. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our products. As a leader, we are committed to addressing this challenge head on and are working closely with the Oregon Department of Agriculture and other experts to identify and eliminate H5N1 in pet food.
