Northwest Naturals Update: Ensuring the Safety & Quality of Our Pet Food

At All American Pet, we know how much you care about your pets, and we are committed to providing only the best, safest, and most nutritious food options. We want to update our customers regarding a voluntary recall initiated by Northwest Naturals in December 2024 and reassure you about the high safety standards in place to protect your pets.

What Happened?

In December 2024, Northwest Naturals issued a voluntary recall on a limited production of their Feline Turkey Recipe (2lb frozen bags) after the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) found traces of H5N1 (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza) in an opened bag. This recall was initiated out of an abundance of caution after a report linked the product to a case involving a cat’s illness.

What Was Found?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and ODA conducted a full investigation and audited the co-manufacturer’s facility between December 2024 and February 2025. The results:

No findings of H5N1 or other safety concerns in the facility. ✔ The FDA did not identify a source of contamination in the opened product bag. ✔ This recall was never listed on the FDA’s official Recalls & Withdrawals list (FDA Recall List). ✔ After a thorough review, the recall was officially closed as of February 7, 2025.

Northwest Naturals’ Commitment to Safety

Northwest Naturals has always maintained high safety and quality standards in their USDA- and FDA-regulated facility, ensuring that all raw ingredients and finished products meet the strictest guidelines. Here’s what goes into their safety protocols:

  • Human-Grade Ingredients: Only approved, high-quality raw materials that meet USDA standards.

  • Sanitation & Hygiene:

    • Strict Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP)

    • Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to prevent contamination

    • Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) Program for identifying potential risks

  • Lot Segregation & High-Pressure Processing (HPP):

    • This process inactivates bacterial and viral pathogens while keeping nutrients intact.

What’s Next?

Following the FDA’s directive to raw pet food manufacturers on January 17, 2025, H5N1 is now considered a known potential risk. In response, Northwest Naturals has further strengthened their supplier agreements to ensure that all raw ingredients meet even more rigorous safety standards before being used in their products.
